Overview & History
Eglin Air Force Base, established in 1935, is the world’s largest Air Force base spanning over 724 square miles across northwest Florida. Originally named Valparaiso Bombing and Gunnery Base, it was renamed Eglin Field in 1937 to honor Lieutenant Colonel Frederick Eglin, killed in an aircraft accident.
Eglin’s massive size encompasses diverse terrain including forests, swamps, and over 86,000 acres of water ranges in the Gulf of Mexico. This geographic diversity makes Eglin ideal for testing virtually every type of air-delivered weapon system in the U.S. military arsenal.
The base played critical roles in World War II, hosting the first operational jet fighter squadron and training Doolittle Raiders before their famous 1942 Tokyo raid. During the Cold War, Eglin became the Air Force’s primary weapons development and testing center.
Today, Eglin AFB hosts two primary missions: weapons testing through the 96th Test Wing and F-35 Lightning II pilot training through the 33rd Fighter Wing. The base tests and evaluates air-delivered weapons, navigation systems, guidance systems, and command/control systems. If it goes on or comes off an aircraft, it’s likely tested at Eglin.
The 96th Test Wing operates the Air Force’s busiest airfield and most complex test ranges. Eglin’s ranges can replicate virtually any combat scenario and environmental condition. The base supports over 130 tenant organizations including Navy, Army, and international partner units.
Eglin’s location on Florida’s Emerald Coast provides access to world-class beaches, exceptional quality of life, and year-round outdoor recreation. The combination of critical mission and outstanding location makes Eglin one of the Air Force’s most desirable assignments.
