Overview & History
Fort Cavazos, established in 1942 as Camp Hood (tank destroyer training center), is the U.S. Army’s premier power projection platform and largest active duty armored installation. Originally named after Confederate General John Bell Hood, the installation was renamed Fort Cavazos in May 2023 to honor General Richard E. Cavazos, the Army’s first Hispanic four-star general and Distinguished Service Cross recipient.
During World War II, Camp Hood trained over 200,000 tank destroyer personnel. The post became permanent Fort Hood in 1950 and grew into a massive armored force installation during the Cold War. The post’s size—340 square miles—provides unmatched training areas for armored and mechanized forces.
Fort Cavazos is home to III Corps (“Phantom Corps”), which serves as the Army’s power projection headquarters. The 1st Cavalry Division (“First Team”), one of the Army’s most decorated divisions, is the installation’s primary combat formation operating M1 Abrams tanks, M2 Bradley fighting vehicles, and supporting equipment.
The post has deployed forces to every major conflict since Vietnam, with particularly heavy deployments during Iraq and Afghanistan operations. Fort Cavazos units are continuously forward-deployed or preparing for deployment, maintaining high operational tempo.
Fort Cavazos provides comprehensive training facilities including live-fire ranges, urban operations sites, aviation training areas, and maneuver space for brigade-level exercises. The installation supports over 90,000 soldiers, family members, and civilians, making it a city-sized military community.
The nearby cities of Killeen, Copperas Cove, and Harker Heights form a military-centric community deeply connected to the installation. Fort Cavazos is central Texas’s economic engine and a cornerstone of the Army’s armored capability.
