Overview & History

Holloman Air Force Base, established in 1942 as Alamogordo Army Air Field, has served for over 80 years. Renamed Holloman AFB in 1948 to honor Colonel George V. Holloman, a pioneer in guided missile research killed in 1946.

Holloman played critical roles in Cold War research including high-speed rocket sled testing and aerospace medicine. The base hosted space shuttle landings and advanced weapons testing. Today’s mission centers on training—F-16 fighter pilot training, MQ-9 Reaper remotely piloted aircraft training, and unique partnership with German Air Force.

The 49th Wing operates F-16 Fighting Falcons training U.S. Air Force pilots in air-to-air and air-to-ground tactics. The wing also trains MQ-9 Reaper pilots and sensor operators for remotely piloted aircraft operations. The German Air Force Flying Training Center at Holloman trains Luftwaffe pilots—unique international partnership.

Holloman’s location in southern New Mexico provides excellent flying weather (350+ days sunshine annually), vast training airspace, and proximity to White Sands Missile Range. The high desert environment offers clear skies and year-round operations.

Alamogordo (population 31,000) is small city with limited amenities but friendly, affordable, and safe. White Sands National Park (world’s largest gypsum dune field) is 15 minutes from base—spectacular natural wonder. Those who embrace desert Southwest and outdoor activities find rewarding assignments despite remote location.
